Preparing For Examinations

It’s the time of the year when students and parents begin to feel the pressure of the upcoming examinations. This phase does not need to be stressful for families, especially if efforts are made to plan ahead. Just like a hardworking man who works all his life, planning ahead for retirement and saving early will put him in a very good position for early retirement. The same rule applies for exam preparations.

Planning months in advance and spreading out revision work will allow both student and parents to recognise any weak areas early on. Having identified areas that require more attention, the child can easily work with their tutors and teachers to address the weak points.

Top students do not wait for test or exams before they begin their revisions. For these pupils, revisions begin the very first week of school where they will attempt mock tests covering relevant topics almost as soon as they are taught in class. Do not be disheartened if your child does not score well during these mock tests, the purpose is to help identify weak areas early on. It is much better to know what to improve on and work on mistakes long in advance instead of discovering a lack of understanding of crucial topics right before the examinations.

To ensure a fresh and alert mind during the upcoming examinations, ensure that your child gets enough sleep. Many doctors agree that sleep is cumulative. If a child fails to get enough rest, it would certainly affect his or her concentration during the run up to the examinations. Fitness and mental alertness goes hand in hand – a child who keeps a healthy lifestyle with frequent exercise will reap huge benefits and be at the peak of their physical and mental form.

Also, ensure a healthy diet. Avoid excessive sugar and fatty foods which may cause fatigue and poor health. Winning students tend to have their nutritional needs well taken care of. Even during intense study sessions, make sure your child has a five minute break – where they stand and stretch – for each hour of study. Avoid late nights as the body works best on regular sleep cycles.
